TUC Engages in Negotiations with Tinubu’s Delegation to Avert Strike, Presents Demands on Fuel Subsidy Removal

A delegation from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) recently met with a team appointed by President Bola Tinubu to address the ongoing fuel subsidy controversy in Nigeria.

The TUC, while showing some willingness to accept the removal of petrol subsidy, presented a set of demands to the government. Dele Alake, a member of the presidential delegation, highlighted the key points discussed during the meeting. With the removal of fuel subsidy, the TUC argues that workers’ purchasing power will be significantly affected. Therefore, a substantial increase in the minimum wage is crucial to mitigate the impact. The government intends to establish a tripartite committee comprising representatives from the federal government, state authorities, organized labor, and the private sector. This committee will assess the implications of a wage increase in terms of percentages and the affected categories of workers.

Other Demands and Future Engagement with NLC:

While the full list of demands from the TUC was not disclosed, tax breaks for workers were mentioned as one of the requests. However, Dele Alake clarified that these demands will be addressed comprehensively during the next round of negotiations. It was further noted that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was not present at the meeting, but additional meetings, including with the NLC, are planned to address their concerns.

The nationwide strike planned by the NLC and TUC in response to the removal of fuel subsidy has been put on hold as progress is being made through negotiations. The government aims to find a middle ground and address the demands of the labor unions. While reverting to the previous status quo was discussed, its practicality and viability will be examined further during the upcoming meetings.
