President Muhammadu Buhari may have dashed the expectations of South-East leaders that their request for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, would be granted.

This is as Buhari has foreclosed the possibility of a political solution in the case of the self-determination group’s leader.

Recall that South-East leaders had in November 2021, paid a visit to Buhari in Abuja, where they begged him to grant Kanu amnesty.

They had hoped that the president would oblige their request in order to diffuse ongoing tension in the South-East over Kanu’s travail.

However, President Buhari in an interview he granted Channels Television, which was aired on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, said he “wouldn’t dare interfere with the judiciary,” in the trial of the IPOB leader.

The Nigerian government is currently prosecuting Kanu, whose group are demanding the Republic of Biafra, on charges of treasonable felony.
