The Tukur Buratai Institute For War And Peace, a research Institute of the Nigerian Army University in Buratai village, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State is now a ghost building as workers and soldiers have abandoned the structure.

CaracalReports learnt that this was a fallout of an attack by militants of the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād.

The institute was built by the Nigerian Army for training and capacity building of military personnel as well as civilians in counter-terrorism and insurgency, humanitarian responses, peacebuilding and construction.

The fighters attacked the institute on Monday, which is also named after the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai (retd.), shooting heavy artillery and blowing up the entrances with explosives.

A military source said the destruction had forced workers, lecturers and soldiers to desert the building.

“It is a ghost area presently. Staff, workers, lecturers and soldiers have absconded. The military fear there may still be further attacks. About 10 soldiers were killed in the Monday assault although the Nigerian Army has not said anything about it officially,” the source said.

The terror group had claimed responsibility for the incident, adding that two armoured vehicles and five cars were burned while a military operational vehicle and three motorbikes were captured, along with weapons and ammunition.

It also released photographs of the deadly attacks, showing how the front session of the institute was razed by the artillery.
