NURTW demonstration: Lagos Police deploy ‘MASSIVE’ troops

The Lagos State Police Command informed Lagosians on Wednesday that they may go about their daily business without fear, saying it has deployed “huge” patrol teams in every nook and cranny of the state to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

Adekunle Ajisebutu, the state Police Public Relations Officer, stated in a discussion that the Command got unsubstantiated allegations that disgruntled members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers planned a demonstration in key locations around the state.

He said, “We cannot take chances. We have done massive deployment of police patrol teams to every nook and cranny, including parks and garages in the state. There is no cause for alarm.”

As at the time of reporting this article, a union official had not returned phone calls or text messages.
Following weeks of continuous strife and leadership wrangling, the union’s national headquarters removed its Lagos State Chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya, alias MC Oluomo, last Thursday.

Akinsanya later announced his and lieutenants’ departure from the union. He also told them to cease giving NURTW fines in parks and garages.

He also requested that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu take over the management of all parks and garages in the state till peace was restored to the union.

Sanwo-Olu later banned NURTW’s activities in all parks and garages with immediate effect and formed a committee to assume charge of the parks and garages.

According to reports, the Lagos State Council Group of Elders of NURTW ordered the union’s national headquarters in Abuja to lift Akinsanya’s suspension within seven days in a letter sent on Monday.
