Former Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, IRT, Abba Kyari, has claimed a danger to his life at the Kuje jail institution.

Kyari expressed concern about sharing a detention institution with criminals.

The suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, revealed this while requesting that an Abuja Federal High Court reconsider his bail plea, which had previously been denied.

Nureini Jimoh, Kyari’s lawyer, included the statement in a document handed to the Abuja Federal High Court.

“At the center, the applicants who were head and deputy head of the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force experienced severe resistance, violence, and blatant threats to the applicants’ life by series head (sic) of criminals that they had busted,” the document reads.

“There is no correctional centre that the criminals that have been arrested by the IRT under the headship of the applicant in furtherance of their constitutional and statutory duties as police officers cannot be found and there is a high likelihood of threat to the lives of the applicants.”

Kyari was remanded to the Kuje Correctional Centre by the court in March, pending the outcome of his trial.

He was detained on February 12 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and arraigned on March 7 on drug trafficking charges.
