ASUU strike: Gunshots as soldiers disperse protesting Ondo students
On Tuesday, men from the Nigerian Army allegedly stormed the scene of a student demonstration in Akure, Ondo State.
The students had gone out for a second day of protesting across the state against the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ continuing strike action.
Soldiers walking in formation with their weapons, followed by a vehicle, have been distributed in videos. As they progressed, they heard sporadic gunfire, and several of the kids fled in terror.
While protesting, students from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, in Akure, barricaded key routes, including the Benin-Ore Express road, with counterparts from adjacent states.
According to sources, the police and army arrived at the protest area yesterday, but today they arrived with violence, dispersing the students and disrupting other activities.
“In Ondo, what occurred in Lekki is occurring again!” Another video shows one of the demonstrators screaming as the students’ protest instruments were dispersed.
Another person shouted, “They’re killing us.”
