The Independent National Electoral Commission has budgeted a total of N355 billion for the elections in the 2023 fiscal year.

Recall that in December 2021, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, informed the National Assembly that expected expenses for the elections in 2023 totaled N305 billion.

Yakubu revealed this when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Appropriations, which is chaired by Kano North APC Senator Barau Jibrin.

As a result, the National Assembly approved spending N305 billion for the general elections in 2023.

But the INEC chief defended the 2023 Budget estimates before the Senate Committee on INEC, which is chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya, APC, of Kano South. He claimed that the electoral body has budgeted an additional N50 billion for its annual budget in 2023, an increase of N10 billion from the N40 billion approved by the National Assembly for the 2022 budget.

N2.6 billion was set aside in the 2023 budget for off-season elections like the governorship races in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa. This budget was presented to the Senate Committee on INEC for review.

On November 11, 2023, the three states will have their elections.

The N2.6 billion, according to INEC, will be used to cover expenses related to elections, referenda, and recalls, such as those related to printing ballots, result sheets, forms, and envelopes, as well as logistics costs, honoraria for officials, supervision, RAC planning, security, and intervention support, etc.

“Election ICT system support, printing of voters’ register for off season and bye elections , F$A Election fund management logistics,” Yakubu said.

According to INEC, the agency’s 2023 budget will include N50 million for the purchase of firefighting gear, N150 million for motor vehicles, and N250 million for the renovation of offices and residential buildings.
