2023: UK, Commonwealth delegation sues for credible, peaceful elections
The Commonwealth Pre-Election Mission in Nigeria and Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, have urged political parties and the electoral umpire to make the 2023 general elections credible and peaceful.
The United Kingdom won’t hold back from imposing penalties on any person or organization that engages in electoral violence, according to Laing, who was speaking at a meeting with the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday in Abuja.
The Commonwealth team, at a separate discussion with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, stressed the importance of Nigeria conducting its elections correctly, citing the nation’s important location on the continent as justification.
The head of INEC gave the international community assurances that the commission would conduct fair elections in 2023.
