ASUU Re-Elects Osodeke as National President in Uncontested Election

In a development that unfolded during the early hours of Monday, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke was unanimously re-elected as the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for another two-year term.

This pivotal decision was made during the union’s 22nd National Delegates Conference, which took place between May 19 and 21, 2023, hosted by the prestigious University of Jos in Plateau State.
Professor Osodeke, a distinguished academic from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, emerged as the frontrunner in the election, enjoying unanimous support from ASUU members across the country. Alongside him, Chris Piwuna, a Consultant Psychiatrist and Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Jos, was re-elected as the Vice President, solidifying the leadership team.
Several other National Officers of ASUU also secured their positions during the conference, showcasing the union’s confidence in their ability to effectively steer its course. Noteworthy among the re-elected officials are Prof. Siji Sowande, retaining the role of Treasurer; Prof. Ade Adejumo, continuing as Financial Secretary; Dr Austen Sado, remaining as Investment Secretary; Dr Adamu Babayo, retaining the position of Internal Auditor; and Dr Aisha Bawa, who assumed the role of Welfare Secretary, succeeding Dr Stella-Maris Okey.
Reflecting on the outcome of the National Delegates Conference, Professor Osodeke expressed his satisfaction, emphasizing the success of the event. He briefly addressed the matter while en route to Abuja, stating, “We have concluded our national delegates conference in Jos. It was a resounding success. We are currently en route to Abuja, where we will issue a comprehensive statement regarding the conference, my re-election, and the newly elected national officers. Thank you.”
The re-election of Professor Osodeke as the National President of ASUU signifies the trust and confidence that members have bestowed upon him to lead the union for another term.
