The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State during the 2023 general elections, Oladipupo Adebutu, has taken legal action against the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, the Director of the State Security Services, Yusuf Bichi, and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa. Adebutu seeks an investigation into the leaked interim report of an ongoing investigation, expressing concern over the premature disclosure of incomplete findings to the media.

While acknowledging the existence of the lawsuit, Adebutu’s Media Director, Afolabi Orekoya, clarified that it was merely a petition. He firmly denied allegations of involvement in a N2 billion vote-buying scheme, labeling the claims as baseless. This response was prompted by online media reports suggesting that the Ladi Adebutu Campaign Organisation engaged in vote buying during the governorship election.
Orekoya vehemently refuted the allegations in a statement, dismissing them as groundless and a desperate attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the governor-elect, Dapo Abiodun, to undermine their robust case before the Tribunal. The PDP had previously contested Abiodun’s victory and brought the matter before the election petition tribunal.
Highlighting the ongoing efforts by the APC and its candidate to coerce and intimidate Adebutu and his family into withdrawing their petition, Orekoya expressed little surprise at the recent development. He further accused the APC of resorting to media trials, malicious tactics, and deceit in an endeavor to influence public opinion and confuse the judiciary.
In the statement, Orekoya emphasized that the claims made by certain online news platforms, led by Premium Times, lacked substantiation. These allegations, which insinuate the involvement of a “PDP chieftain in trouble” in a N2 billion vote-buying scheme, serve as further evidence that the Ogun APC and Dapo Abiodun have resorted to baseless blackmail after realizing the strength of Adebutu’s case.
Orekoya referenced an earlier incident where the Ogun APC Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, made unfounded claims on a television show regarding the Adebutu family’s philanthropic activities. He emphasized that such attempts to twist the details of the family’s gestures, including the burial of the late Dame Caroline Adebutu, were unreasonable and unjustifiable.
Moreover, the statement raised concerns about the purported “interim report” of the ongoing investigation referenced by the APC, stressing that it had not been concluded. The APC’s preemptive disclosure of this report was seen as a deliberate and mischievous attempt to blackmail Adebutu. Orekoya called on the police authorities to investigate how explicit details from an unfinished investigation were leaked to the press, as the underlying petition appeared to be politically motivated.
In conclusion, the Adebutu camp maintains its commitment to pursuing justice through legal channels and rejects the malicious tactics employed by the APC and its candidate. They remain confident in the strength of their case and urge the public to disregard baseless allegations and media manipulation.
