Former Ekiti Governor Fayemi Denies EFCC Probe Allegations of N4bn Fraud
In a recent development, the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has vehemently denied being under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for an alleged N4 billion fraud. This statement comes as a response to rumors circulating about a possible probe into his financial activities during his tenure as governor.
Issuing a comprehensive statement on behalf of Fayemi, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, the Head of the Fayemi Media Office in Abuja, clarified that during his visit to the EFCC, no such allegations were raised during the conversation with the agency’s officials. The statement further revealed that Fayemi had been responding to a frivolous petition filed by a group seeking to tarnish his reputation and good name.
Addressing the concerns surrounding the invitation and subsequent visit of Dr. Kayode Fayemi to the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Office, the statement shed light on the circumstances surrounding the matter. It was explained that the former governor had received an invitation from the Ilorin office of the EFCC last month, regarding a money laundering petition against him. However, as this occurred during the critical period of the change of government, where numerous important events and programs were scheduled, Fayemi requested a more suitable date for his appearance to avoid disrupting these commitments.
The statement continued by clarifying that on Thursday, accompanied by his legal counsel, Fayemi willingly visited the EFCC office in Ilorin to engage in discussions with the investigators. After a few hours of fruitful dialogue, he was allowed to depart. The statement emphasized that Fayemi’s visit provided satisfactory answers to the agency’s inquiries regarding the petition, and he remains fully prepared to cooperate further if required.
Additionally, it was clarified that the allegations of a purported N4 billion fraud case against Fayemi, which had circulated in the media, were baseless. The only matter addressed during his conversation with the EFCC was the frivolous petition from a faceless group called the Ekiti Patriotic Coalition. The statement strongly asserted that this coalition serves as a front for some anti-Fayemi politicians who are determined to tarnish his reputation and image.
Throughout Fayemi’s tenure as governor, he demonstrated unwavering commitment to the people of Ekiti State, earning him a reputation for principled leadership. His dedication to the welfare of citizens resulted in significant advancements in infrastructure development and attracted valuable investment opportunities to the state. The statement reaffirmed Fayemi’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and expressed confidence that the truth would prevail in due course.
It is essential to approach this matter with caution and await further updates. Dr. Kayode Fayemi has served the people of Ekiti State with utmost dedication, and it is vital to ensure fairness and due process in evaluating these allegations.
