On March 28, 2025, at 12:50 PM local time, a catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar near Mandalay, resulting in extensive destruction and a significant loss of life. The tremor, originating from a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, was followed by a powerful 6.4-magnitude aftershock 12 minutes later. As of March 29, the death toll has risen to over 1,600, with more than 3,400 injured and numerous individuals still unaccounted for.
Impact on Infrastructure and Population
The earthquake inflicted severe damage on infrastructure across the affected regions. In Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, numerous buildings collapsed, including residential apartments and religious structures. A tragic incident occurred in Kyaukse, where a preschool collapsed, resulting in casualties among children and staff. Additionally, the collapse of an apartment building in Mandalay trapped over 90 residents under the rubble.
Critical infrastructure such as bridges and roads sustained significant damage, hindering transportation and complicating rescue operations. In the capital city, Naypyidaw, roads buckled, and partial roof collapses were reported, further exacerbating the challenges faced by emergency responders.
Regional Effects
The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar’s borders. In Bangkok, Thailand, approximately 600 miles from the epicenter, residents experienced intense tremors that led to the collapse of a 33-story high-rise building under construction. This disaster resulted in at least ten fatalities, 26 injuries, and 47 individuals reported missing. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared Bangkok an emergency zone and implemented safety measures to address the crisis.
Government and International Response
In the aftermath of the disaster, Myanmar’s military government declared a state of emergency in the most severely affected areas and issued a rare appeal for international assistance. Countries including China, Russia, India, and South Korea responded by dispatching rescue teams and medical personnel to aid in relief efforts. The United Nations allocated $5 million for immediate humanitarian aid to support the affected populations.

U.S. President Donald Trump also pledged assistance, with USAID disaster experts prepared to provide essential supplies such as food and water. However, concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of the current disaster response system, with some former officials describing it as “shambles.”
Challenges in Rescue Operations
Rescue operations have been significantly hampered by ongoing instability from Myanmar’s civil conflict and limited resources. The destruction of communication networks and transportation infrastructure has further complicated efforts to reach and assist those in need. Emergency responders are working tirelessly to locate and rescue survivors trapped under debris, but the scale of the disaster poses immense challenges.
Seismic Context
Myanmar is situated along the Sagaing Fault, a major tectonic boundary comparable to California’s San Andreas Fault. This region has a history of significant seismic activity due to the complex interactions of the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates. The recent earthquake’s shallow depth contributed to its destructiveness, drawing comparisons to the devastating 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake.
Humanitarian Efforts
International humanitarian organizations have mobilized to provide aid to the affected regions. Project HOPE, for instance, is coordinating an emergency response to deliver medical supplies, food, and water to those impacted by the earthquake. They are also focusing on supporting local healthcare systems overwhelmed by the disaster.

The 2025 Myanmar earthquake underscores the urgent need for improved building standards, disaster preparedness, and international cooperation in regions prone to seismic activity. As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the resilience and solidarity of affected communities and the global response.
