Olympic gold medalist, reality television celebrity, and transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner recently announced her bid to run for California governor.

Jenner is a well-known Republican that is ambitious to beat out the current Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA). She recently took to Twitter to make her announcement, saying, “I’m in,” and that” Californians deserve better” in her press release.

“I have been a compassionate disrupter throughout my life, from representing the United States and winning a gold medal at the Olympics to helping advance the movement for equality,” Jenner said in her press release. “As Californians, we now face a now-or-never opportunity to fundamentally fix our state before it’s too late. Taking on entrenched Sacramento politicians and the special interests that fund them requires a fighter who isn’t afraid to do what is right. I am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom’s disastrous time as governor.”

Newsom is serving his first term as California governor and is likely to be recalled for election this year.

The 71-year-old Caitlyn Jenner is known for her 20 seasons of “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” and “I Am Cait,” which launched in 2015 after Jenner came out as a transgender woman.

“California has been my home for nearly 50 years. I came here because I knew that anyone, regardless of their background or station in life, could turn their dreams into reality,” Jenner said in her press release. “But for the past decade, we have seen a glimmer of the Golden State reduced by the one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision.”

Jenner has connections to former President Donald Trump, who is unpopular in the state of California. Although she supported him in the beginning, Jenner ended up admitting that she was wrong for thinking he would stand up and help the transgender community after he rescinded federal guidelines in 2018 that allowed transgender students to use whatever bathroom they choose. She also criticized Trump after he disallowed transgender’s from serving in the U.S. military.

Another obstacle Jenner would have to overcome is the 2015 car accident. She rear-ended two cars which resulted in the death of a 69-year-old woman after her car was pushed into oncoming traffic and hit by a Hummer vehicle.

It’s unknown what stance Jenner takes on many issues, but the press release gave Californians a glimpse of where she may stand on important political topics.

“Small businesses have been devastated because of the over-restrictive lockdown,” Jenner said in her press release. “An entire generation of children have lost a year of education and have been prevented from going back to school, participating in activities, or socializing with their friends. Taxes are too high, killing jobs, hurting families, and putting an especially heavy burden on our most vulnerable people.”

A recent survey conducted in California showed that those who support recalling Newsom are at a mere 40 percent.

“This isn’t the California we know,” Jenner said in her press release. “This is Gavin Newsom’s California, where he orders us to stay home but goes out to dinner with his lobbyist friends.”

Newsom faced backlash after photos were leaked in Nov. 2020, where he was dining at a restaurant in San Francisco for Lobbyist Jason Kinney’s birthday. Newsom was not following the same protocols that he established for the state. The dinner sparked outrage among many Californians.

Jenner has put together a team from the GOP base such as Trump Campaign Pollster Tony Fabrizio, Founder of RedRock Strategies Ryan Erwin, President of Allegiance Strategies Tyler Deaton, Former Trump Administration Asset Steven Cheun, and help from Trump Campaign Manager Brad Parscale.

“In the next few weeks, I will meet with Californians from across the state – from the North Bay to the Central Valley to Orange County and San Diego – to hear their voices and finally get this state moving in the right direction,” Jenner said in her press release. “The significance of this decision is not lost on me. The sacrifice is significant, but the responsibility is great, and I can’t wait to lead, to help, and most importantly to disrupt the status quo once again.”

A campaign advisor told Axios that Caitlyn Jenner is “socially liberal and fiscally conservative”.

“Californians want better and deserve better from their governor,” Jenner said in her press release. “For too long, career politicians have over-promised and under-delivered. We need a leader with a vision and the resolve to see it through. This will be a campaign of solutions, providing a roadmap back to prosperity to turn this state around and finally clean up the damage Newsom has done to this state.”
