Nigerians have spent over N2.4bn on movie tickets in 52 weeks of 2021 despite cries for poverty in the country, a report has shown.

The report, which is the latest by Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), and published on its website, was obtained by Caracal Reports on Thursday, January 6, 2021.

The report noted that Nigerians spent N1.2bn in 2020, and N4.1bn as ticket sales in 2019.

According to the report by CEAN, Nigerians during the holiday season alone, between Friday, December 24th to January 2nd, cinemas in Nigeria made more than N650million.

Among the top movies watched by Nigerian cinema enthusiasts were Spider-Man: No way home, Christmas in Miami, and Aki & Pawpaw.

Nigerians paid N291m within nine days to watch Spider-Man, and N29.2m for tickets to watch ‘Aki & Pawpaw’.

A breakdown of the top 20 movies during the holiday season showed that 10 Nollywood, seven Hollywood, one Bollywood, One kannywood (Hausa) and one Gollywood movie, were preferred by cinema-goers in Nigeria.

The report is coming as Nigeria is rated as the world capital of people living in extreme poverty.
