Trouble looms for MTN Nigeria as workers threaten strike action over inhuman treatment

Except concerns of workers of MTN Nigeria are addressed urgently, the telecommunication firm may face some troubles soon.

This is like the workers under their union –  Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) have accused the company of inhuman treatment and have given the telecommunication firm a 14-day ultimatum starting February 10, 2022, to address their concerns.

The workers, who said that MTN Nigeria has failed to agree to their terms, said they want issues bothering on discriminatory remuneration, mutually negotiated exit benefits, and retirement benefits, to be addressed.

PTECSSAN President, Opeyemi Tomori, said after the Federal Government’s intervention in previous requests fell on deaf ears, the union has no option left than an imminent industrial action.

According to Tomori, MTN is allegedly insisting that the condition of service in its company policy will remain unchanged despite the agreement signed at the Ministry of Labour, a stand he said negated their deal to negotiate previous benefits.

Noting that the Nigeria Labour Congress will join the protest which will start from February 23, 2022, Tomori said the action would disrupt the operations of MTN Nigeria.

He added, “As daunting as those issues raised back then was, it was the firm belief of our union that the collective bargaining agreement if negotiated in good faith and signed off by both parties, would go a long way in addressing the concerns of the workers in the organization.

“Unfortunately, the company has remained adamant, insisting that all the workers’ conditions of service as stated in the company’s policy must remain so and cannot be negotiated.”

Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria said it knew nothing about plans by its Nigerian workers to embark on strike soon.
