Development of prepaid meter to commence in Nigeria

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure and Momas Electricity Meter Manufacturing Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of smart prepaid meters in Nigeria.

According to a statement released by MEMMCOL on Friday in Lagos, the agreement was signed on Thursday in Abuja by Mr Kola Balogun, Chairman of MEMMCOL, and Prof. Mohammed Haruna, Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI.

Balogun stated that the alliance would contribute to addressing the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry’s metering difficulties.

“The terms of reference are that we work and synergize to develop local capabilities on meters and other technology orientated devices that would benefit the country,” he explained.

“This meter will make energy more accountable, it will be consumer-friendly, ease revenue collection and monitoring of power theft in the sector.”
Balogun stated that the processes have already begun and that the new meter will be available by the end of the year.

He stated that after the meter prototype was completed, it will serve as a standard and guide for other companies in Nigeria that manufacture meters.

“This will be a more modern type of meter and will address all the peculiarities being faced currently by prepaid meter users.“We believe this is an opportunity to close the huge metering gap in the country which is one of the problems bedevilling the power sector,” Balogun said.

Haruna, for one, stated that NASENI was ready and willing to collaborate with the company in areas such as meter installation, training, design, and maintenance.

He stated that NASENI’s mission was to work with organizations such as MOMAS to promote national growth and employment creation.
