For the Nigerian telephone network, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has authorized a new National Numbering Plan (both fixed and wireless).

The Commission adopted a new strategy for 296 telecoms operators to ensure that each user connected to their network receives a unique national number.

Following the Commission’s permission, MTN Nigeria, Globacom, Airtel Nigeria, and 9Mobile, among others, will soon begin selling new mobile phone lines, both fixed and wireless, as well as data-only operators, to subscribers at their service centers around the country.

The goal of the National Numbering Plan, according to the NCC in a document reviewed by TechnologyMirror, is to establish an unified numbering scheme and associated dialing protocols to be employed in the network to allow the subscribers and operators to set up calls.

Airtel’s 0912, 0917, MTN’s 0913, 0916, Globacom’s 0915 and 0905, and 9Mobile’s 0908 and 0909 are among the numbers published by the NCC.

The NCC has allowed values ranging from 500 to 10,000 lines for each access code. Other figures include 1000 and 2000 lines.

More crucially, the National Numbering Plan establishes a uniform dialing method for the following categories of calls: local calls, long-distance calls, international calls, emergency calls, and special services calls, regardless of where the call originates in the country.
