Nigeria’s Super Eagles, three-time African champions, will play their debut game under new coach Jose Peseiro on Saturday night (Sunday morning in Nigeria).

It’s a friendly versus Mexico’s El Tri, the previous CONCAF winners. The match will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in the United States of America.

Despite having a number of excellent players on the roster, the Super Eagles were unable to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) responded by overhauling the team’s technical staff, with only Salisu Yusuf remaining in his position.

Augustine Eguavoen, the NFF’s technical director, was in command of the team in an interim capacity, as was Chief Coach Emmanuel Amuneke, Assistant Coaches Joseph Yobo and Paul Aigbogun, and goalkeepers trainer Alloy Agu.

Finidi George, Usman Abdallah, Ike Shorunmu, and Eboboritse Uwejamomere, all former Super Eagles wingers, were called in to help.

Maykel Moreira (Fitness Coach), Acacio Santos (Assistant Coach), and Vitor Hugo (Assistant Coach) were among Peseiro’s international assistants (Analyst).

Despite the absence of certain regulars from the game and the upcoming friendly against Ecuador, Peseiro still has a solid pool of players from which to choose.

When the Super Eagles face the Sierra Leone Stars and Guinea-Bissau Bissau Wild Dogs in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month, the real work begins.

Peseiro, who was recommended to the NFF, can win over the supporters, who aren’t persuaded he’s the ideal guy for the position, by starting his reign on a good note, according to president Amaju Melvin Pinnick.
