Airtel Nigeria has renewed its commitment to responsible environmental management, including proper electronic waste disposal, recycling, and repurposing.

Surendran Chemmenkotil, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airtel Nigeria, commented on the company’s observance of World Environment Day in 2022:  “The Airtel Nigeria’s ambition is to address and minimize the impact of its operations on the environment as this is critical for the world we live in. Airtel is committed to raising awareness about climate/environmental stewardship amongst employees and to work together as a team towards the delivery of its sustainability goals.”

Chemmenkotil added: “I have asked all my colleagues to bring to the office any electronic items from their homes that are old and no-longer of any use to them – so that Airtel can then prove its position as a technology company, that consistently explores sustainable ways of reusing, repurposing, recycling, and disposing of e-waste from our network and offices.

“We are committed to our overarching Airtel Africa Sustainability strategy, and we will continue to implement these plans relentlessly at the local level.”

Employees of the telco responded to the CEO’s call by arriving at the office on Monday, June 6th with electronic waste, which they deposited in designated areas across the country. The e-waste will be collected by a reputable e-waste partner and recycled, repurposed, or disposed of responsibly.

On Monday, June 6th, as part of the awareness program, an awareness session was organized in the company’s headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, with employees at regional offices digitally connecting. Employees were encouraged to contribute in their own unique ways to the advancement of sustainable environmental management, the reduction of environmental footprint in response to climate change initiatives, and the reduction of activities that have a negative impact on health and the environment during the session.
