A chief magistrate court in Awka, Anambra State has remanded a native doctor simply identified as Nonso, for attempted murder on a 25-year-old lady.

Nonso, a native of Umuona in Aguata Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra state, was on Wednesday brought before the Children, Sexual and Gender-based court presided over by his worshiper, Genevieve Osakwe.
It was gathered that the suspect who was in a relationship with a single mother of two had sent a commercial cyclist to pick up the mother and her children. On their arrival, he slit the woman’s throat and attempted to bury her with her children in an already-dug grave.

The victim who begged to be anonymous said she had gone to see the suspect after being discharged because he had promised to marry her.

She stated, “On that fateful day the suspect sent a bike man to bring me and my kids to his house. He didn’t allow us to go home that day because it was already late. He later told me that he has a surprise for me, and he used a white handkerchief to blindfold me.

“It was at that point that I struggled to know what was happening but unfortunately it was too late for me as the suspect had already brought a knife and started slitting my throat.”

She further claimed that although she struggled with the victim, she was overpowered and dragged into the dug grave. She revealed that she was rescued by the suspect’s sister after she alerted the public of her ordeal, who in turn captured the native doctor, but could not capture the bike man, his accomplice before he escaped.
The State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, was said to have come to the rescue of the victim and her two children, through the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence response team, and the suspect was arraigned.

During the court proceedings, no plea was taken by the defendant. The case was adjourned to December and the victim was remanded at the State’s correctional center at the court’s order. The court ordered the police to ensure the arrest of the suspect’s accomplice in order to serve justice to the offenders and serve as a deterrent to others who may wish to engage in such a nefarious act.
