Governorship candidate jailed 42 years in Akwa Ibom
Bassey Akpan, a senator from Akwa Ibom State and the chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Upstream, has been found guilty of corruption and sentenced to 42 years in prison by the Federal High Court in Uyo.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought Senator Akpan to court and ordered him to spend his sentence in the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Center in Akwa Ibom State.
During his (Akpan’s) term (2010–2014) as Commissioner for Finance in Akwa Ibom State, he was charged with accepting bribes for 12 cars valued at N254 million from oil trader Olajide Omokore.
