The National Democratic Coalition Renewal Group says Nigeria’s democracy is evolving, hence the need for continued support and diplomatic ties with the international community to sustain it and better the citizens’ lives.

The group, which described the February 25 presidential election as the freest, fairest and most credible election so far in the country, expressed confidence in the ability of the winner of the election, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to meet the yearning of the populace and move the country forward.

NADECO Renewal Group stated these in a letter to the President of United States, Joe Biden, titled, ‘Nigeria’s democracy not hollow, it’s evolving promisingly’, made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti, in reaction to an earlier one written to the US President by Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, over the election.

Adichie had in her letter, titled, ‘Nigeria’s hollow democracy,’ faulted the US for congratulating Tinubu, who she alleged emerged through unlawful process, on the grounds that the election was allegedly full of irregularities and violence and as well compromised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

But the NADECO Renewal Group, in the letter signed by its chieftains including National Leader, Prof Atilade Adeeyo; National Secretary, Dr Afolabi Taiwo; Sanni Aliyu, National Organising Secretary; and Public Relations Officer, Prof Tijani Wakeel, urged Biden to trash Adichie’s letter and continue to collaborate with Nigeria for sustenance of democracy and development.

According to the group, “giving attention to Adichie’s letter would hurt the feelings of many democratic and patriotic Nigerians who are eagerly awaiting and preparing for the swearing-in of our President-elect, Tinubu, come May 29th, 2023.”

The group said the opposition, rather than congratulating the President-elect, were making moves to truncate the country’s democracy.

It said Tinubu deserved the victory that Nigerians gave him in the poll, adding that, “Dear President (Biden), over 18 million registered and accredited voters across the six geopolitical zones of our dear country thumbprinted the ballots to affirm that Tinubu is the choice of the majority in that historic February 25th, 2023 presidential poll.

“We have full assurance that Tinubu’s presidency will bring the eldorado the country has always craved for and that awesome process of national rebirth, rebuilding and rehabilitation as already begun by the current President Muhammad Buhari-led administration, will continue progressively from May 29, 2023.

“We are grateful that your office has since done the needful by congratulating the Tinubu. Nigerians will ever be grateful for your (US) support and fairness in nurturing the diplomatic relationship between our great country and your greatest America!, a global example of democracy”, the NADECO Renewal Group stated.
