Garba Shehu, the spokesperson for former President Muhammadu Buhari, has refuted claims that Buhari urged his successor, President Bola Tinubu, not to investigate certain ministers from the previous government. Shehu also clarified that Buhari had left his hometown of Daura to seek some much-needed rest in London, as constant visits from well-wishers were impeding his recovery.

In response to circulating social media rumors, Shehu stated, “If social media is to be believed, former President Muhammadu Buhari is requesting his successor, President Bola Tinubu, not to investigate some former officials of his government…this is fake news, and nothing more.” He further dismissed reports that Tinubu had assured Buhari and his close aides of exemption from any future anti-corruption endeavors.

Shehu emphasized that such claims were baseless and should not be entertained or given undue attention. He pointed out that the alleged conversation between Buhari and Tinubu took place behind closed doors, with no witnesses present to report on their discussion.

The spokesperson elucidated that Buhari deliberately chose to maintain a low profile in order not to distract the new administration. “He (Buhari) chose to go home in Daura hoping to find the type of quiet he wished for himself but realizing that this was not the case, visitors trooping in morning, day and night, he moved out to a more distant place,” Shehu explained.

Shehu concluded by emphasizing Buhari’s desire for the necessary rest he needs and his hope that the Tinubu administration can work in a conducive environment to fulfill the promises made to the Nigerian people.
