The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the heinous killing of Usman Buda, a butcher in Sokoto, by religious extremists who accused him of blasphemy. CAN emphasizes the importance of protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations, and calls upon the government to take immediate action in ensuring such protection.

CAN President, Daniel Okoh, expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. In a statement released in Abuja, he emphasized that CAN firmly upholds the principles of freedom of religion and peaceful expression of beliefs. The association unequivocally denounces any form of violence or vigilante justice carried out in the name of religion.

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to foster religious tolerance, peace, and unity in our diverse society. CAN will continue to advocate for the protection of every citizen’s rights, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

Furthermore, CAN urges religious leaders and their followers to actively promote inter-faith dialogue and peaceful coexistence, thereby contributing to a harmonious Nigeria. The association extends its thoughts and prayers to the family of Usman Buda during this challenging period.

By taking a firm stance against this senseless act of violence and emphasizing the importance of religious harmony, CAN aims to foster a society that values diversity, respects individual beliefs, and upholds the fundamental rights of every citizen.
