APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu Resigns Amidst Imminent Impeachment Threat

In a stunning turn of events, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has tendered his resignation from the position. Reports indicate that Adamu submitted his resignation letter on the evening of July 16, 2023, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This move comes just ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s return from the African Union (AU) meeting in Kenya.

According to a reliable source, Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, forwarded the resignation letter to the Chief of Staff of the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, around 4 pm on Sunday. The letter, addressed to President Tinubu, was redirected to his chief of staff in the president’s absence.

The decision to step down reportedly came as a result of a brewing confrontation during the party’s scheduled meetings for the following days. Allegedly, there was a significant plot against Adamu by influential individuals close to the president, who sought to undermine him and potentially initiate impeachment proceedings. Sensing the impending storm, Adamu chose to pre-emptively resign to spare himself from potential humiliation.

A founding member of the party, speaking on the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the national chairman caught wind of a plan to collect signatures for his impeachment during the forthcoming meetings. In response, Adamu decided to preempt any such move and save face by resigning from the post he once held dear.

When reached for comment, Adamu maintained that he would refrain from discussing the matter until President Tinubu’s return from the AU’s meeting. This sudden turn of events has sent ripples through the APC leadership and raised questions about the party’s stability moving forward.

The APC, which had seen its fair share of internal conflicts, now faces yet another significant challenge with the abrupt departure of its national chairman. As party members await President Tinubu’s return, speculations abound regarding the potential impact of Adamu’s resignation on the party’s direction and future.

In the wake of the resignation, the scheduled meetings were subsequently postponed and rescheduled for the coming days. As the APC leadership scrambles to assess the situation and chart a path forward, the political landscape in Nigeria finds itself bracing for potential shifts and realignments within the ruling party.
