Nigerians demand immediate rescue of abducted Federal University students in Zamfara
#BringBackFugusGirls has been trending on X (formerly Twitter) with some Nigerian tweeps demanding the immediate rescue of all kidnapped students of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State.
It was reported how some gunmen suspected to be terrorists kidnapped students of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria.
The gunmen invaded the students’ residence at Sabon-Gida identified as Nazeer Sabon-Gida and took away the female students.
A few hours later, the Nigerian Army announced that it had rescued six of the students after a gun battle with the terrorists.
Giving an update on the matter, the state police command spokesman confirmed that not all of the kidnapped students were rescued by the Army.
He, however, said the number of the remaining students in the terrorists’ den had yet to be ascertained and that security personnel had been deployed since Saturday to rescue them.
Reacting to the incident on X, the country’s immediate past Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq described it as a senseless crime.
She said, “My sincere condolences to the families and friends of the students of Federal University Gusau who have been abducted. This is a senseless crime, and I am deeply saddened to hear about it.”
Another user, Mallam Jabir said, “The abduction of large number of female students at the Federal University Gusau is highly condemnable in all ramifications. We’re calling on the relevant authorities to do the needful at the right time. We pray to Allah to protect them and grant them the ability to reunite with their loved ones.”
M.S. Ingawa accused President Bola Tinubu of allowing incidents like the one at the university on Friday to occur during his administration even though one of his defence ministers is from Zamfara State where the latest incident occurred.
He claimed over 40 female students were abducted by the terrorists.
He said, “Over 40 grown-up girls have been kidnapped from Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State few days ago but we are yet to see even a response from Abuja.
“This is a state that has a sitting Defense Minister. Nobody can sleep with his daughter, sister in the hands of kidnappers because you don’t know what will happen to her. And such things make people never trust the schools again out of fear and anxiety when we need people in school more than ever.
“Asiwaju promised security and he must be held accountable just like he said himself. No explanation is enough to convince people who’s relatives are out there. The government should do everything possible to get our sisters back home. #BringBackFugusGirls at all cost.”
